Concentration Risk
A small number of conglomerates dominate mainstream English-language news. News Corp (Murdoch), Comcast/NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros Discovery alone control Fox News, WSJ, NY Post, The Times, The Sun, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, and Sky - reaching billions while answering to shareholders, not readers.
Independent vs Corporate
True editorial independence is rare. The Guardian is owned by the Scott Trust (non-profit), the BBC publicly funded, and Reuters/AP operate as wire services. Most consumer-facing brands are subsidiaries of multinationals whose commercial interests can influence coverage priorities and framing.
State-Controlled Media
RT (Russia), CGTN (China), Al Jazeera (Qatar), France 24 (France), DW (Germany), NHK (Japan), and BBC World Service (UK) are all state-funded. Editorial positions often reflect host government foreign policy objectives - transparency about this is essential.
UK Press Landscape
UK print is dominated by three groups: News UK (Murdoch - The Times, The Sun), DMG Media (Viscount Rothermere - Daily Mail, Metro), and Reach PLC (Daily Mirror, Express, Star, 130+ regional titles). Together they account for the overwhelming majority of UK daily newspaper circulation.
What is MediaLens?
A personal news intelligence dashboard aggregating headlines from global sources, overlaid with political bias ratings, media ownership data, and reliability scores. Know who is telling you what - and why they might be telling it that way.
Bias Ratings
Derived from AllSides Media Bias Ratings, Ad Fontes Media Political Bias Chart, and Media Bias/Fact Check. They reflect overall editorial tendencies - not individual articles. Bias does not equal inaccuracy.
Reliability Scores
Scores (1-10) reflect factual accuracy, journalistic standards, corrections transparency, and sourcing quality. 8+ = high. 6-8 = good. Below 6 = use with caution. Source: Ad Fontes Media and independent fact-checkers.
